Most, if not all moving companies do not cover OPB (owner-packed boxes). Read any contracts and ask the moving company this question. In the event that you handle the packing yourself, you will be voiding any insurance compensation that the movers may offer for the contents of these boxes. It is impossible for a mover’s insurance company to provide coverage for the contents of boxes that have never been seen by them, as they have no way of knowing whether the contents were packed properly or not. As a result, if you pack it, you take the risk. Please inquire about our “Packing Tips” form to ensure everything boxed up stays secure and undamaged. With your own home insurance, you may not need any extra coverage through the movers. It is always a good idea to contact your insurance company to find out what kind of coverage you already have before moving. You can also ask us about increased liability coverage!

Basic coverage should cost you nothing. Nobody charges for this. It is included and is the minimum as required by law. Added Value will cost more, but it varies depending on the increase in value.

Items that are NOT insured

There are things that are not insured, even if you pay for coverage. An example would be jewelry. It is best to pack up your jewelry and other items that are not normally insured such as coins, stamps, documents, etc. There is no insuring items of sentimental value.

Generally, the interior workings of appliances, televisions, stereos, etc. are not covered by the mover unless the mover does obvious physical damage to the piece. If the item was handled properly and something does not work after the move, it’s your responsibility. If there is obvious damage the item, it is likely that the internal damage was a result of the move and will be covered (up to your protection selection).

Again, contents of boxes are not covered under cargo protection policies unless the mover has packed and unpacked the cartons. If there is obvious damage to the exterior of a box, generally the mover will compensate you.

IKEA and other particle board material furniture are not covered by most, if not all, movers. Particle board is made from compressed wood fibers and adhesives, making it prone to chipping, cracking, and even collapsing very easily. The way particle board furniture is often designed, with weak joints and thin veneers, makes it vulnerable to damage during the moving process.

Dangerous Goods

Do not pack any item classified as dangerous goods. If any damage resulted from a dangerous good, your insurance would be void and you would not get the basic $0.60 per pound per article.
